The Festival is also very proud to have the City of Ottawa recognize June 24th, 2012 as Indian Classical Arts Day in Ottawa. It is truly a day of celebration for all artists of this genre across Canada. There will be a formal presentation of the proclamation on June 24, 2012 by the Mayor Jim Watson. Come Celebrate with us, as Gharana Arts plans to lead this initiative across the country to all major cites!
About the Festival:
The first �Canadian Gharana Festival: A Celebration of Indian Arts� will be held June 22-24, 2012 at the Shenkman Arts Centre and Centrepointe Theatre, in Ottawa.
This inter-community festival aims to showcase classical arts from all regions of the Indian subcontinent.
Set apart from other Indian festivals, the Canadian Gharana Festival will celebrate Canadian practitioners of Indian art and recognize the importance of Canadian influences on Indian art forms.
Performances are specifically aimed at making this artform accessiable to all Canadians regardles of cultural background. The Festival also aims to promote appreciation for Indian arts among Canadians of Indian and non-indo origin.
This will be the first event in Ottawa where artists from a variety of Indian artistic disciplines can perform, network and collaborate.
The opening evening, will feature remarks from renowned art historian, Indian anthropologist and curator emeritus from the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Dr. Stephen Inglis.
Hosted by Gharana Arts (www.GharanaArts.com), the Canadian Gharana Festival brings the artistic traditions of India to a new generation of Canadians and cultivates a passionate environment for the development and progression of these art forms.
Program Highlights:
Music and Dance � Featuring professional national and international artists performing the many traditions of Indian dance and music. Also highlighting the newest dance drama by Gharana Arts entitled �DashAvatar� (Festival Program)
Visual Arts � An exhibition of works centered on Indian artistic themes with a special focus placed on works by youth (Call for Artists)
Literature Contest � A presentation of short stories, poems and prose. The winning piece will be showcased at the Panel Discussion dedicated to this artistic discipline. (Call for Literature)
Film Festival � Showcasing short films including international films on a wide range of topics including child labor, migration and immigration and dancing.
