Stereotype challenged by two women entrepreneurs in Toronto


Women of Kerala have always been strong, be it in sports, church, society or family. Many Kerala families prospered beyond their expectations because of women becoming nurses and working in the Middle East, Europe or the Americas. Their siblings got good education and parents got well-deserved financial help.

But it is very seldom that they have shown initiative in business in a society where 9-5 jobs are preferred to taking risks in business. Mallus are said to be risk averse. Two women from Kerala have now challenged that stereotypical view. They are Sheela Thomas and Meena Thomas in Toronto known as Skylight Travel and Tours. They offer “lowest and discounted airfares” and specialize in Cochin, Trivandrum, Calicut, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. They also speak several languages including Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Hindi among others.
